Whittled Whimsey #4 is another table leg recycled into new life as imaginative whimsey work of art. The head has working lock, and the foot has hasp. No two locks are the same, and a lot of thought has been put into the mechanism, using entirely different ways to lock. Much of the old finish on this table leg has been retained to show its origin.

The theme of WW#4 is unclear, as several different pieces and connections are used for the fun of it, a true one-piece whimsey. The lock is connected by chain links, so is the box.

The next wood-turned section is a 4-bar cage with ball inside, but the ball is a toggle-end connected to ball inside second wood-turned section 4-bar cage with yet another ball inside, connected to 4-bar cage with 3 similar cages, with ball inside last one.

That cage is, in turn, connected by toggle-joint to what was a wood-turned ring which is linked to another wood-turned ring.

This is linked to a pivot-joint which holds an intricately-hinged pear-shaped cage with pear-shaped object inside. The hinges swing open like winged doors.

Yet another toggle-joint attaches to wood-turned ring that is attached by chain links to a ring which is toggle-jointed to a tapering spiraling cage containing an object that spirals downwards according to which way the spiral cage is held.

The difficulty level of the spirals is illustrated by the toothpick-reinforcements that had to be inserted toward the end. This was not planned while carving, just grew like Topsy, a real Whimsey.

Five photos show progression from head to foot.
