Whimsey Chain 2

Whittled Whimsey #2
Signed and dated PR Drumm, 2006
Ash
31” x 2" max. dia.

Exhibited on World Wide Web, http://www.whittledwhimseys.com

Whittled Whimsey #2 was whittled with a pocketknife from an old ash baseball bat. Ash, being one of the hardest woods to carve with a pocket knife, was a nice challenge for the artist. The head end of the bat was whittled into a working lock, and the handle tip was whittled into a hasp, so that future Drumm Whittled Whimseys can be locked together into a continuous chain for exhibition at woodcarving shows. So far, thirty-five feet of Whimsey Chain have been carved from 30" bats, table legs, etc.

The theme illustrated by this Whimsey #2 is the enclosed object-in-cage, chain-linked together.

Head of Bat

Photo #1 shows the working lock at the head of the bat.

Swan in Cage

Photo #2 shows a swan-in-cage.

Small Chain Link

Photo #3 shows (a) a small chain link in lattice-cage, and (b) on the other side is a long chain link in much larger cage. This is a wry symbolization of the hunt for Humankind's missing link.

Fish Spearing Bird

Photo #4 shows what appears to be the usual ball-in-cage but a closer look shows a fish-spearing bird.

Monkey Business with Remaining Links

Photo #5 shows monkey business with the remaining links.
